For George S. Kaufman, his move to the countryside was for an entirely different reason. In 1937 Beatrice Kaufman purchased Barley Sheaf Farm, 5281 Old York Road, Holicong, immediately following the scandal with her husband and actress Mary Astor. With the playwright branded Public Lover No. 1 in the press, he escaped to the farm with his wife and adopted daughter, Anne. To the three-story house that dated to the mid-1700s, Bea added a writing room for her husband, and he used it to collaborate with Hart. One of the greatest hits of their careers came out of life in Bucks County: The Man Who Came to Dinner was modeled on Alexander Woollcott visiting a place just like Kaufman’s. Today the farm is a bed and breakfast inn.
