Episode 23: Comedienne Maggie Champagne

This has to be one of the funniest guests we’ve had on in 23 shows. We sit down with actress-comedienne Maggie Champagne to find out what’s happening with her comedy career. After a taste of fame in a commercial that became a viral sensation, she’s now working on her career onstage, on TV, and in auditions. She and her old friend Amy Schumer worked together on the Comedy Central series, and Maggie has a monthly Continue Reading →

RIP Commodore Hotel aka Grand Hyatt

My friends of the Guides Association of New York City, of which I’m a proud member, tipped me off to the news today that the Grand Hyatt Hotel is going to be razed. This is sad because 2019 is the centennial of the hotel’s opening. I was immediately reminded of the hotel because it’s an entry in my 2005 book A Journey into Dorothy Parker’s New York (Roaring Forties Press). I wrote a chapter about Continue Reading →

Episode 22: Ranger Joe Korber

The first uniformed guest we’ve had on the show is Ranger Joe Korber, however, due to the government shutdown the day we recorded the episode, Joe had no uniform or Smokey campaign hat on. Joe is a veteran of the national park service, a lifelong Queens guy, and a musician. We chat about the two national parks where he works, Teddy Roosevelt National Historic Site (Joanna has never visited) and Governors Island National Monument (Joanna Continue Reading →

Episode 20: So You’re Dating A Vegan’s Liz & Duncan

We are nominated in the category “Outstanding Achievement in a Radio Program or Podcast” and are up against 3 other podcasts (and tough competition). We will find out March 4 if we win. In other Continue Reading →

Episode 18: Astrologist Kathy Biehl

The stars are in alignment on this show as we bring in Kathy Biehl, and expert on astrology who gives us her astro-insights. Joanna and Kevin’s Big Show is all about New York City and what makes it great, and today’s show is about one of those people and her interest in the stars. Kathy is a native of Texas and a non-practicing lawyer. She’s had a passion for the stars and mystical matters since Continue Reading →

Before New York City was on the map it was New Amsterdam, and on this episode of the Big Show we meet someone who loves this era. Episode 16: Live Music Jam with Big Ed Cody

Our first-ever live music performance on the show results in a major accomplishment: We record our new show theme song. Big Ed Cody of the Whiskey Wranglers is our guest. Listen as we work out—and try multiple takes—of the song we’ll use to open and close the show. The Whiskey Wranglers play all over the city and Ed is the lead singer and guitarist. Also on the show he plays a little Johnny Cash and Continue Reading →
